After the Civil War coal replaces wood as fuel.
In the 1880s the next generation of pioneers
build the city with coal as railroads replace wagon wheels.
By the 1920s oil and gasoline
build the suburbs.
White-rimmed automobile tires
replace railroad wheels
as highways replace rails.
By the 2020s
we must give up burning gasoline
